United Methodist Women

 UMW Circles—What is a Circle?

It can be described as an unbroken line, but here at Timberlake United Methodist Church, it can best be described as an unbroken bond of fellowship and service.

The purpose of the United Methodist women is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the Church.

There are four Circles at Timberlake.  They meet September through June.  The Wesleyan Circle meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m., the Bonnie Harris Circle meets on the first Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., the Susanna Wesley Circle meets on the third Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.  Our newest circle "Circle of Friends" meets the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 6:30 p.m. in Hughes Hall.

The Circles are all part of the United Methodist Women.  Our General Meeting is held on the third Wednesday evening of the month at 6:30 p.m.

OUR FELLOWSHIP
Each Circle meets ten months of the year and occasionally two or more will meet together for special occasions.  Also, each Circle selects officers every two years as does the United Methodist Women.  The Circle meetings are conducted as to the wishes of the participating members.  The program may be a special speaker, a Bible study, a special program series, or just an evening of fellowship.

Each year the Timberlake UMW holds a Fall Bazaar to raise funds for additional service projects within our own church and within the local community.  A few of the projects that benefit from these funds include the St. Andrew Potato Project, the Red Bird Mission, the OWLS, Family Service, and the Henry Fork Mission.  Traditionally, each Circle takes a special responsibility for the various parts of the Fall Bazaar.

The United Methodist Women here at Timberlake has a strong role in the life of the church.  It is strong in all the aspects as stated in the purpose, but is especially welcoming to new members within its fellowship.  We would invite each and every woman to visit one or all of our Circles, as it gives you an opportunity to meet more of our members, and it will make our church a very special home for you.

The Timberlake United Methodist Women's Reading Library is located in Room 28 and consists of 60 books.  This is a specialized library which is a collection of books from the UMW recommended list of its Reading Program.  The Women’s Division of the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church recommends a diverse range of books with the intention of broadening exposure to a variety of concepts.  Part of the purpose of the reading program is to expand understanding of participation in God’s mission, to grow in understanding scripture as it relates to today’s life, and to strengthen involvement in Christian mission.  This library is being used by the Timberlake United Methodist Women to qualify as a star unit.

The books are listed in four categories:  Education for Mission, Nurturing for Community, Social Action, and Spiritual Growth.  Each book has an author, as well as its category.  To check out a book, please put your name and date on the note card and place it into the index box on the top of the bookshelf.  Simply return the note card to the book when you are finished and replace the book on the bookshelf.
